SBA launches Business Resilience Guide for small business disaster preparedness

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has introduced a comprehensive Business Resilience Guide, a practical tool designed to empower small business owners to prepare for and recover from disasters. This guide, segmented into six key sections, offers best practices and templates to assist entrepreneurs in mitigating disaster impacts and rebuilding stronger.

SBA Administrator Isabel Casillas Guzman underscored the importance of small businesses in local economies and reiterated the SBA’s dedication to their swift recovery from natural and other disasters. Highlighting the increasing economic impacts of climate change and natural disasters, Guzman emphasized that the new guide equips business owners with essential tools and strategies to enhance their operations, recover from disruptions, and build resilience.

Key areas covered:

1. Understanding their current landscape: This section focuses on documenting essential operations and identifying dependencies to ensure all critical aspects of the business are covered.
2. Identifying key partnerships: To ensure business continuity, it is crucial to recognize and maintain relationships with important vendors, suppliers, and collaborators.
3. Safeguarding vital resources: Emphasis is placed on data backup, cybersecurity measures, and infrastructure protection to secure essential resources.

Associate Administrator Francisco Sánchez Jr., from the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience at the SBA, highlighted small businesses’ vital role in their communities and disaster recovery efforts. He noted that proactive planning and preparation can significantly enhance a small business’s ability to withstand and recover from disasters.
